Charlie Dittmeier's Cataract Surgery

May, 2016

At my last couple physical exams, my doctor informed me of the progress of cataracts that were developing. Now it is time to take care of them and I went to the Takeo Eye Hospital.

Maryknoll worked with CBM to set up the Takeo Eye Hospital (TEH)to train eye doctors and eye nurses. This is a picture from the opening of their new building in 2010. Now I will be going back there as a patient with surgery scheduled on the first eye for Thursday morning, 5 May 2016. The hospital doesn't have a nursing service or a food service so I'm sure there is no wi-fi(!) so updates here will have to wait until I return, hopefully with better vision!

This is Mr. Te Serey Bonn who is the director of the Takeo Eye Hospital. He has established a very fine hospital, one of the three regional hospitals for eye care in Cambodia, and TEH provided fine care for me when I had a cataract removed today. I stayed overnight and then returned to Phnom Penh the next morning after the bandages were removed. Next week I will go back to Takeo for a follow-up examination, and then in one month I will have the cataract on the other eye removed.
